A FREE, COMPASSIONATE GUIDE FOR PARENTS

When Going to School Feels Too Hard

When your child is struggling to attend school, it can be difficult to know what to say or do.

This gentle guide will help you understand what your child may be communicating and consider the next small step without blame, guilt or added pressure.

WHAT YOU’LL FIND INSIDE

This guide will help you:

• consider what your child’s behaviour may be communicating

• begin a gentle conversation without demanding an answer

• respond more calmly during a difficult school morning

• make routines feel safer and more predictable

• identify one small and realistic next step

This guide is for parents and carers of primary-aged children from Year 3 onwards, including children who are home educated or experiencing anxiety around school and learning.

It is not about forcing your child into school or giving you another list of things you should be doing. It is about helping you pause, understand and respond with compassion.

ABOUT KELLY

I’m Kelly Edwards, a qualified primary teacher with more than 13 years’ experience, a qualified counsellor and a registered member of the BACP.

My experience includes mainstream primary schools, SEN and SEMH settings, medical-needs tuition and supporting children who find school attendance difficult.

My counselling training informs the calm, compassionate and relationship-led way I work. My learning-support sessions are educational rather than therapy and are shaped around each child’s interests, pace and individual way of learning.
